How to Opt-Out of IDEA for Allan Elementary Parents
Allan Elementary will be replaced by an IDEA charter school next year.
Students entering Kindergarten through 2nd grade at Allan next fall will be enrolled in IDEA Allan.
As a parent or guardian of an Allan student, you have the right to opt-out of IDEA Allan and instead send your child to Govalle Elementary or Ortega Elementary with District transportation.
UPDATE: While the opt-out deadline of March 9th has passed, you still have two options:
1) Deliver your opt-out letter to the Office of Student Services as soon as possible and request that AISD honor your intentions. There is no deadline to apply to IDEA, so in fairness, there should be no deadline to opt-out of IDEA, either. Choice forms are available at your school or the Office of Student Services. Deliver or mail completed forms to Office of Student Services, Carruth Administration Center, 1111 West Sixth Street, A200, Austin, TX 78703.
2) Apply for a non-priority transfer, processed based upon available space on a first come-first served basis. The deadline to apply for non-priority transfers for the fall semester is August 10, 2012. Transfer forms are available at your school or the Office of Student Services. Deliver or mail completed forms to Office of Student Services, Carruth Administration Center, 1111 West Sixth Street, A200, Austin, TX 78703.
Generally, if you live west of Airport Blvd. and Bohm Rd., you can opt-out of IDEA Allan and attend Govalle.
Generally, if you live east of Airport Blvd. and Bohm Rd., you can opt-out of IDEA Allan and attend Ortega.
You should have received a letter giving you the ability to opt-out of IDEA Allan and instead attend Govalle or Ortega. If you did not receive a letter, you can get another copy from the office staff at Allan. Letters must be completed and returned to AISD Office of Students Services or the office staff at Allan by the end of the day, Friday, March 9th, if you wish to opt-out of IDEA Allan.
IDEA is headquartered over 300 miles away in the Rio Grande Valley. IDEA does not outperform all neighborhood public schools. IDEA does not offer dual language instruction. IDEA does not have art or music classes taught by special area teachers. Student activities and clubs are limited and IDEA does not belong to the University Interscholastic League.
