The Austin school district is moving forward with a proposal to turn two Northeast Austin middle schools into single-sex campuses, with one meeting this weekend and two more formal hearings in the coming weeks.
The district is considering having all students who live in the Pearce and Garcia middle school attendance areas in Northeast Austin attend either an all-boys or all-girls middle school. The hope is that those environments would improve academic performance. Officials also want to diversify the portfolio of educational options available in the district.
This weekend’s community meeting will be today from 10 a.m. to noon at LBJ High School, 7309 Lazy Creek Drive. A public hearing will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the school board auditorium at district headquarters, 1111 W. Sixth St. An additional public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at Reagan High School, 7104 Berkman Drive.
